Clinical Clues

1. A broodmare is investigated after failing to conceive over multiple breeding cycles.
2. The owner reports a small amount of vulvar discharge after covering.
3. Ultrasound identifies fluid retained within the uterus.
4. The mare otherwise appears healthy and cycles normally.
5. Endometrial cytology and culture support uterine inflammation and infection.
6. Inflammatory disease of the equine uterus is a common cause of subfertility in mares.

Diagnosis

Equine Endometritis

This case is most consistent with Equine Endometritis because the mare has repeat breeding failure with uterine fluid and supportive reproductive diagnostics. The most important clues are the infertility history and intrauterine fluid, which make an ovulation problem less likely.
