Clinical Clues

1. A rapidly growing kid from a high-grain group is found dead and another becomes acutely neurologic.
2. The owner says the affected kids were among the best-doing animals in the pen.
3. One live kid shows abdominal pain and then develops paddling movements.
4. The course of disease is very rapid once signs begin.
5. This is a clostridial toxemia linked to sudden dietary energy excess.
6. Enterotoxaemia in goats is commonly associated with Clostridium perfringens overgrowth.

Diagnosis

Caprine Enterotoxaemia

This case is most consistent with Caprine Enterotoxaemia because the kids are thriving on rich feed and then develop sudden fatal toxemia. The most important clues are the overfeeding history and peracute progression, which make simple coccidiosis less likely.
