Clinical Clues

1. A goat develops fever, coughing, and increased respiratory effort after abrupt bad weather.
2. The owner reports the group was recently transported and mixed with unfamiliar animals.
3. Auscultation reveals harsh cranioventral lung sounds.
4. The goat is depressed and has a mucopurulent nasal discharge.
5. The pattern is one of bacterial bronchopneumonia in a stressed small ruminant.
6. Pasteurellosis is a common cause of acute respiratory disease outbreaks in goats.

Diagnosis

Caprine Pneumonic Pasteurellosis

This case is most consistent with Caprine Pneumonic Pasteurellosis because the goat has stress-associated bacterial bronchopneumonia with cranioventral lung involvement. The most important clues are the recent transport stress and respiratory findings, which make a parasitic pneumonia less likely.
