Archive Case #232: Ferret Aleutian Disease

Exotic veterinary case - Medium - October 21, 2026

Clinical Clues

  1. A pet ferret has slowly lost weight and energy over several months.
  2. Examination finds poor condition and an enlarged spleen without an obvious focal mass.
  3. Serum protein electrophoresis shows a marked polyclonal gamma-globulin increase, indicating sustained immune stimulation.
  4. Systemic coronavirus disease and lymphoma remain possibilities because this protein pattern is not unique.
  5. A parvovirus-specific antibody assay is positive, and PCR detects matching viral DNA in blood from this clinically ill ferret.
  6. The compatible chronic illness and virus-specific findings support ferret Aleutian disease, an amdoparvovirus-associated immune-complex disorder.

Diagnosis

Ferret Aleutian Disease

Chronic wasting, splenomegaly and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia raise suspicion; concordant virus-specific antibody and viral DNA support ferret Aleutian disease in this ill animal. Systemic ferret coronavirus and lymphoma can also increase globulins, so the protein pattern or seropositivity alone would be insufficient. Remember: A ferret's high gamma-globulin fraction is a clue, not a diagnosis; combine compatible illness with virus-specific evidence and challenge coronavirus disease and lymphoma.

Evidence checkpoints

Clues 1-2

  1. Clue 1: A pet ferret has slowly lost weight and energy over several months.
  2. Clue 2: Examination finds poor condition and an enlarged spleen without an obvious focal mass.

Clues 3-4

  1. Clue 3: Serum protein electrophoresis shows a marked polyclonal gamma-globulin increase, indicating sustained immune stimulation.
  2. Clue 4: Systemic coronavirus disease and lymphoma remain possibilities because this protein pattern is not unique.

  1. Clue 5: A parvovirus-specific antibody assay is positive, and PCR detects matching viral DNA in blood from this clinically ill ferret.
  2. Clue 6: The compatible chronic illness and virus-specific findings support ferret Aleutian disease, an amdoparvovirus-associated immune-complex disorder.
