Clinical Clues
- A dog is rushed in after exercising on a hot day and collapsing shortly afterwards.
- The owner reports heavy panting and progressive weakness before collapse.
- On examination the dog is hyperthermic, congested, and mentally dull.
- The mucous membranes are brick red and the heart rate is markedly elevated.
- Bloodwork shows evidence of dehydration and systemic inflammatory injury.
- Failure of thermoregulation after heat exposure can cause multisystem collapse in dogs.
Diagnosis
Canine Heat Stroke
This case is most consistent with Canine Heat Stroke because the dog collapsed after heat exposure and has severe hyperthermia with systemic compromise. The most important clues are the environmental trigger, marked overheating, and cardiovascular instability, which strongly support heat-related illness.
