Clinical Clues
- A pony is presented for acute onset lameness affecting both forelimbs.
- The owner reports the pony was turned onto lush pasture several days earlier.
- Since yesterday, the pony has been reluctant to walk and has spent more time lying down.
- On examination, the pony stands with the forelimbs stretched out in front and shifts weight frequently.
- Both forefeet have increased digital pulses and the hooves feel warm.
- The classic stance and bilateral forelimb pain are most consistent with laminar inflammation of the feet.
Diagnosis
Equine Laminitis
Laminitis is a painful inflammatory condition affecting the laminae of the hoof. It commonly follows dietary overload or endocrine disease and classically causes a rocked-back stance, increased digital pulses, and reluctance to move.
