Archive Case #45: Equine Recurrent Uveitis
Horse veterinary case - Medium - April 17, 2026
Clinical Clues
- A horse is re-examined for another episode of a painful watery eye.
- The owner says similar flare-ups have occurred more than once over the past year.
- The affected eye is held partly closed and is very sensitive to light.
- Examination reveals miosis, corneal oedema, and aqueous flare.
- There is no single recent trauma to explain the repeated inflammatory episodes.
- Recurring inflammation of the equine uveal tract can lead to progressive ocular damage and vision loss.
Diagnosis
Equine Recurrent Uveitis
This case is most consistent with Equine Recurrent Uveitis because the horse has repeated painful ocular episodes with miosis and intraocular inflammation. The most important clues are the relapsing course and classic signs of uveitis, which make a one-off traumatic injury less likely.
