Archive Case #51: Avian Egg Binding
Bird veterinary case - Easy - April 23, 2026
Clinical Clues
- A laying companion bird is found sitting fluffed up on the cage floor and repeatedly straining.
- The owner reports reduced droppings and a recent history of nesting behaviour.
- The bird adopts a wide-based stance and appears uncomfortable.
- Coelomic palpation suggests a firm ovoid structure in the caudal abdomen.
- Imaging confirms retention of a shelled egg.
- Failure to pass an egg normally can cause straining, weakness, and life-threatening reproductive obstruction in birds.
Diagnosis
Avian Egg Binding
This case is most consistent with Avian Egg Binding because the bird is straining with a retained shelled egg confirmed on imaging. The most important clues are the laying history, cage-floor posture, and caudal abdominal finding, which make a simple gastrointestinal problem less likely.
