Archive Case #81: Feline Panleukopenia
Cat veterinary case - Medium - May 23, 2026
Clinical Clues
- An unvaccinated kitten is presented for sudden lethargy, vomiting, and severe diarrhoea.
- The owner says the kitten stopped eating and became profoundly weak within a day.
- Examination reveals dehydration, abdominal discomfort, and depression.
- Haematology shows marked leukopenia.
- The kitten comes from an environment with other susceptible young cats.
- A highly contagious viral disease of cats commonly causes gastrointestinal signs together with profound leukopenia.
Diagnosis
Feline Panleukopenia
This case is most consistent with Feline Panleukopenia because the unvaccinated kitten has acute gastrointestinal disease with severe leukopenia. The most important clues are the age, vaccination status, and white cell depletion, which make simple dietary diarrhoea much less likely.
