Archive Case #84: Swine Oedema Disease
Pig veterinary case - Hard - May 26, 2026
Clinical Clues
- Recently weaned pigs are found dead or showing acute incoordination and recumbency.
- Several affected animals have swollen eyelids and a squealing voice.
- The pigs were among the better growers before the outbreak.
- Fever is not a prominent feature despite the severe neurologic signs.
- The pattern is consistent with toxin-mediated vascular damage associated with certain E coli strains.
- This post-weaning disease of pigs commonly causes oedema, neurologic signs, and sudden death.
Diagnosis
Swine Oedema Disease
This case is most consistent with Swine Oedema Disease because the recently weaned pigs have eyelid swelling, neurologic signs, and sudden deaths without a strong febrile component. The most important clues are the post-weaning timing and oedema pattern, which distinguish it from simple enteric diarrhoea.
