Archive Case #88: Caprine Paratuberculosis
Goat veterinary case - Medium - May 30, 2026
Clinical Clues
- An adult goat is investigated for chronic weight loss that has not responded to routine parasite control.
- The owner reports reduced production and progressive poor body condition.
- Diarrhoea is mild or inconsistent rather than severe.
- Multiple adults in the herd have gradually become thin over time.
- Pooled herd testing supports infection with MAP.
- Caprine paratuberculosis, also known as Johne disease, is a chronic enteric wasting disease of goats.
Diagnosis
Caprine Paratuberculosis
This case is most consistent with Caprine Paratuberculosis because the adult goat has chronic wasting with herd-level progression and supportive testing for MAP infection. The most important clues are the poor response to parasite treatment, slow course, and herd pattern, which make simple undernutrition less likely.
