Archive Case #90: Feline Pyothorax
Cat veterinary case - Medium - June 1, 2026
Clinical Clues
- A cat is rushed in for severe respiratory distress and reluctance to move.
- The owner reports a few days of lethargy and reduced appetite before the breathing worsened.
- Muffled thoracic sounds are heard bilaterally on auscultation.
- Thoracic imaging reveals pleural effusion compressing the lungs.
- Thoracocentesis yields turbid purulent fluid.
- Accumulation of septic exudate within the pleural space is called pyothorax.
Diagnosis
Feline Pyothorax
This case is most consistent with Feline Pyothorax because the cat has pleural effusion containing purulent exudate and severe respiratory compromise. The most important clues are the muffled thoracic sounds and purulent thoracocentesis sample, which make cardiogenic oedema less likely.
