Archive Case #93: Swine Atrophic Rhinitis
Pig veterinary case - Easy - June 4, 2026
Clinical Clues
- Growing pigs in a shed are sneezing frequently and some have tear staining below the eyes.
- A few animals show mild distortion of the upper jaw and snout.
- There is reduced growth rate across the affected group.
- Nasal airflow is present but the snout shape is becoming abnormal.
- The syndrome is associated with progressive turbinate damage in the nasal passages.
- Atrophic rhinitis in pigs commonly causes sneezing, tear staining, and facial distortion in growing animals.
Diagnosis
Swine Atrophic Rhinitis
This case is most consistent with Swine Atrophic Rhinitis because the pigs have chronic upper respiratory signs with characteristic snout deformation and poor growth. The most important clues are the tear staining and turbinate-related facial change, which distinguish it from simple transient rhinitis.
