Archive Case #97: Bovine Lead Poisoning
Cattle veterinary case - Hard - June 8, 2026
Clinical Clues
- A young calf is presented for sudden neurologic signs including blindness and head pressing.
- The owner recently cleaned up an old dump area near the paddock.
- The calf is hyperexcitable and intermittently grinds its teeth.
- Rumen motility is reduced and the animal is becoming recumbent.
- Testing supports toxic exposure to a heavy metal.
- Accidental ingestion of lead from batteries, paint, or rubbish can cause acute neurologic disease in cattle.
Diagnosis
Bovine Lead Poisoning
This case is most consistent with Bovine Lead Poisoning because the calf has acute cortical signs, gastrointestinal hypomotility, and a credible exposure source. The most important clues are the blindness, head pressing, and recent access to old rubbish, which strongly support lead toxicosis.
